Wasn't sure which site or where to post so I will try here
I have seen several requests for a feature that allows a message box pertaining to each topic, and realized it could be quite useful. Unfortunately, I lack "teh m4d sk1llz" to do such a thing.
The output page in question is not the /modules.php?name=Topics, but rather /modules.php?name=News&new_topic=3 (or whatever topic id number). The gist of what I have tried -- unsuccessfully --is: add a new text field to topic db table, add some text to the field, insert the field into global of /modules/News/index.php, pull the new text from the topic row of the db, and publish it in a table on the topic page directly under the search table.
I *think* I added the field without any major errors, and was able to get the table to show, but without any of the new text in that table.
I realize some minor details would also be of concern, such as an entry area for the new text field in topics admin, but didn't want to get hung up on details
Anyways, if ya find yourself with a spare minute or two and don't mind helping a n00b...

Hrm... I'm lost... so, you're saying... you go to a topic like "-DMF- Clan: Games and Configuration" and you see a story in that topic that interests you --- and you want to discuss it --- but, you have to do it in phpBB --- so, you want to do this without leaving the topics section and going to the forums --- you want to have a way to respond to the stories, using phpBB, but you want to have it integrated into the Topics section?
Do I have the concept right? _________________ .::Buds not bombs::. |

More like... on your mainpage here, you have a message at the top discussing the overall site. Instead of an "overall" message, this would be an individualized message for each topic, followed by that topic's articles. Just like the main message, it is fairly static, while the articles beneath it change.
Ideally, this "topic message" would be entered/altered in the admin menu>topics -- when entering a new topic, after the Topic Image dropdown, a new entry box called "Topic Message".
For a practical example: you have a site -- outdoor sport clubs .org. There are 4 seperate clubs: hiking, biking, swimming, rowing. Once a year the leadership of each of the clubs change, so that info is fairly static. A person wanting to see the activities/news planned for the hiking club goes to that topic. At the top of the hiking topic page is the "topic message" containing: the goal of the hiking club, the current leadership with a brief descriptions and contact info for each. Following that is the news and current events for the hiking club.
Does that clarify anything or make it worse

Yes, I think I have the concept now. Interesting!
Well, let me think about it a little. I have some boring business meetings I need to attend this week, so that will give me some time to ponder it. _________________ .::Buds not bombs::. |

Meanwhile, I will do some serious searching for 'topics tweaks' that others may have already done so that your (and my) time isn't wasted . Of course, if I find something I will let you know.
